The Lord Needs You – Today!

Mark 11:3

3If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ tell him, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’ “

Most of us remember the poster to the left.  Uncle Sam saying I Want You! It was and still is a very popular poster.  A number of them are purchased every year by lay folk who simply like its message.

The draft was still active while I was growing up – the Vietnam war was still being fought as I was going through High School.  Several of my older friends were drafted and went to Vietnam.  One of my cousins was also in the war.  If memory serves me, one year they did the draft and my number was real high – which meant I had a good chance of being drafted if I didn’t sign up, only to cancel the draft before I finished High School.

The passage today is one that prepares us for Holy Week.  Jesus was walking toward the cross as He headed to Jerusalem.  In this passage Jesus sends some of His disciples to get His ride into town (for Palm Sunday).  Not a great white horse as some thought, but a donkey and her fold.  On the donkey Jesus rode into town – we call this a triumphant ride into Jerusalem – the people sang praises to Him.  They threw down their coats and branches and lauded Him as He entered the city.

In a few short days they were probably some of the same folks who watched as He was crucified – facing death on the cross for you and me.  If there was a sign for I need you for Christ it would be Him on the cross saying I died for you!

Just as Christ needed the donkey for His ride into Jerusalem – He needs us – to follow Him – to be the church.  Easter is a special Sunday for sure – but without the cross – Easter has no meaning.  Christ needs us to remember the cross – because at the cross – He paid our debt and He showed how much He loves us.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
