Spiritual Warfare

Ephesians 6:10-13

10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

Not much is said or written about the spiritual warfare we face in our lives.  Yet for Paul, it was very real.  I was talking to a candidate for ministry yesterday and we were talking about sin.  In talking about sin, the question arose concerning what is at work in our lives regarding sin.  The answer began with our personal choices – that we needed to own up to our responsibility in our sin.  I agreed – yet there was more I wanted to hear.  I tried to draw the candidate out – to get the candidate to talk about the spiritual warfare that was going on.

I used an example with the candidate.  I talked about the battles between two forces – one using primitive weapons while the other used firearms.  I said that in time, the firearms would overwhelm the primitive weapons.  I suggested that the primitive weapons would equate to our efforts to not sin.  Pulling ourselves up and striving to not sin is like using primitive weapons.

Ephesians 6:12 – 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

There is spiritual warfare going on – everyday – every moment.  If we try to do battle in the spiritual realm with human will only – we will be defeated more times than not – we will fail and sin – falling short of God’s glory over and over.  But – as Paul writes – if we put on the full armor of God then we can take our stand against the devil’s schemes.

Satan and his demons are running around the world – looking for someone to devour.

1 Peter 5:8 –8Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

More on this subject in Sunday’s message – July 4th.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
