Run the Race of Perseverance in Faith

Hebrews 12:1-2

1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

This is starting to be a nice way to examine a passage.  Today – as we examine Hebrews 12:1-2 we will look at let us run with perseverance.

Running with perseverance reminds me of the many examples in the Bible about athletics.  One such passage is from Paul in another of his many letters to the churches he served.  To the Christians in Corinth Paul wrote the following:

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 – 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. 27 No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

Are you (we) running the race of faith in such a way as to glorify God and achieve all that is before you (us)?  Do you (we) continue to fight the good fight – run the race of life and faith – and seek God’s face in all or most all that you (we) do – say – and/or think?

Our Christian faith is not a comfortable slipper to slip on and off as we desire.  Our Christian faith is to be paramount – primary – that which we give our all to walk.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.

Tomorrow we will look at the race marked out for us.

  1. Awesome!! I had been thinking on these last night in the sanctuary..and God showed me some areas where I can lay aside the sin that so besets me… so I am grateful that I took the time to read yesterday and today. It is hard for me Pastor right now, I am supporting my kids and me with he awesome help of my Father in heaven, however I tend to look down sometimes and then grow weary. Thanks I will run this race and glorify Him…
