Christians are Being Persecuted Around the World

Matthew 5:11-12

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

If you walk out your faith – at work – at home – most anywhere – you have probably faced some measure of persecution.  Persecution can be a small thing or dramatic.  In most of our lives it is a small or smaller thing.  Maybe someone at works makes fun of us for our faith.  Makes fun of the fact that we have a Bible on our desk and read it during break time.  Maybe some ridicule us for going to church or striving to follow the teachings of the Bible.  Maybe some in our own family think we are off our rocker for loving Jesus so much – after all they love Jesus and don’t do many of the things we strive to do as we are faithful to follow Him.

Have you read about some of the persecutions of old?  I’ve read that in the early days of Christianity – they would crucify Christians for sport in arenas.  Can you imagine going to a Crucifixion event at Fed-Ex or M&T Bank Stadiums?  Choice seats to watch people being crucified – hung on crosses.  I’ve also read that some early Christians were forced to fight against trained gladiators – for sport – to watch them slaughtered.  Many times all they needed to do to avoid the suffering was to deny Jesus – to pledge allegiance to Caesar.  Instead – they remained faithful to our Lord and many face a martyr’s death.

When I read about these persecutions – I am sad that I have ever complained about anything I have faced.  How about you?  And this is the persecution of the past.  Christians are being persecuted all over the world today.

Persecution today is happening in places like North Korea, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Laos, India, Sudan, Turkey, Cuba, Kenya, and in many other places.  Christians in these and other places are being crippled, tortured, and put to death for their faith.  Watch this video and see others to become more informed.

These and other video reports of the persecution of Christians around the world gives new meaning to the passage today – “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

I don’t suggest that I have the answers to such problems. All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. (Edmund Burke)  What can we do?  What can you do?

Something to think about today as you go on your way.
