No Eye Has Seen, No Ear Has Heard, No Mind Has Conceived

1 Corinthians 2:9

However, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” —

Did you ever hear this saying – speak no evil, see no evil, & hear no evil? Some say this saying has its roots in Japan in the 17th century – depicting three wise monkeys. Some say it stands for not wanting to get involved. Most of us who have a modern education realize that this saying had its real meaning in the historic 3 Stooges – Moe, Larry and Curley (…that was a funny folks).

I thought of this old saying when I read today’s passage. Paul reminds the reader that if we are following God – if we are setting our hearts on the wisdom of God and not turning aside – No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him.

I like that! Our wildest reality or dream is not great enough for what God has in store for those who follow His commands and live in love. When times are tough and we are downtrodden – we can remember that God has more in store for us than we could ever imagine!

Paul was speaking a word of wisdom to the people of God. Read today’s passage in context: 1 Corinthians 2:6-10 – 6 We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. 7 No, we speak of God’s secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. 8 None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 However, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” — 10 but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.

I know heaven is beyond words – and I know that eternity is beyond my understanding – and I know that the glory of God can only be seen as dimly in a mirror here and now. But the day is coming when we will see and be fully seen. The day is coming when we will be glorified with Him and be like Him! It is greater than what any eye has seen – what any ear has heard – or what any mind has conceived. Praise the Lord!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
