Thoughts and Reflections

You Are A Child of God!

1 John 5:19

We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.

Recently I mentioned in a sermon about keeping our focus on the eternal rather than the temporal – upon the things of God rather than the things of the world. Too often we can be so earthly bound we are no heavenly good. I confessed that at times I get focused on earthly things rather than Godly – eternal things. It is not easy for me – my sin nature surfaces from time to time. I know I am alone in this. I am reminded that the world is the domain of Satan and that we are only visitors here – and that helps me take a deeper look at the things of God.

Speaking of the Holy Spirit – the Comforter – Jesus reminds us that the prince of the world will be defeated – and that God and God’s children will be eternal. John 16:8-11 – 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

My wife often reminds me that this world and the evil in the world do not hold reign over us. The world can do nothing – eternal – to us. When men and women speak evil against us or about us – it cannot harm us. We are children of God and even when the plan of God is not clear to us – God is still in eternal control! I share this often with people who have been abused or who have been raised by critical parents. Their sin does not define us – we are children of God!

1 John 5:5 – Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

Do not allow people who speak ill of you to control you. Do not allow circumstances to control you. Do not allow the prince of the world – of the air – to have even a foothold in your life. Do not allow others to speak your worth. If Jesus is your Lord – you are a child of God. 1 John 5:9 – We accept man’s testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son.

Our worth is not found in the mouths of others – but rather from our relationship with Jesus. Set your hearts on Jesus and strive to be more like Him. You are a child of God and you were worth it all to Him.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.

  2. Hi, Ray —

In the 4th line of today’s devotional, did you mean “I know I am NOT alone in this”?

Say “hey” to Caroline. Hope you’re all doing well.

    • Actually – it was tongue in cheek – but not wanting to speak/type for others – I claimed my struggles and would leave others to claim their own!

Carolyn says hi and our prayers are still with you brother and all that God is doing in your life! Told you once it would be worth it!!
