Jesus Is More Than The Reason For The Season

John 14:6

Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

As we approach Christmas – we try to remind the church often that Jesus is the reason for the season.  We must keep this truth before the church because the world is trying hard to make Christmas more and more commercial.  Christ is being removed from Christmas as fast as our society can accomplish it.

It is even politically incorrect to say Merry Christmas to people these days (I do it anyway).  Society wants us to say Happy Holidays!

I don’t like what society is doing to Christmas – but I can understand it.  Jesus warned us that the world would be out to get us!  John 15:18 – If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.

Something happened recently that awakened me to the fact that political correctness has entered some churches as well it seems (maybe even false teaching).  I attend funerals all the time.  Some I officiate at and some I attend because the departed are family members of our church family or community people I know.

In a recent funeral I attended the pastor made mention to the love that the departed shared.  The departed showed love to many around them – in their family and in their community.  I patiently waited to hear that this love was because of a relationship with Jesus Christ.  I waited to hear that it was the love of God shown to us at Christmas that enabled this person to show love to most everyone they met.  Nothing came.

The pastor went on to say that if we expected to see our departed loved one again – we needed to show this type of love to others.  It was a nice sentiment.  But I was waiting for the source of this love.  It certainly wasn’t just because the departed was a nice person and showed love that they were in a better place today with the angels watching over us.  But nothing about Jesus was mentioned (or if it was – I missed it).

Today’s passage comes in the midst of some final instructions from Jesus Himself.  John 14:1-6 – 1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Jesus is not only the reason for the season – Jesus is the way and the truth and the life!  We cannot enter heaven without accepting Him as Lord and Savior – no matter how nice we are and how much love we show.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.

  1. I have had this same experience with some family funerals. Seems like some believe you can be a good person and get to heaven. How could someone preach such a message?
