The Attitude of a Mature Christian

Philippians 2:5

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

This is one of my favorite passages.  I have a number of them for sure.  Years ago I took this verse and created a statement – that said Christianity Boils Down to Attitude.  My former church would finish this quote when ever I said Christianity boils down to and they would respond with Attitude.  Now I know that Christianity is all about God’s grace – that it is all about Christ’s life – death and resurrection.  But – as we mentioned Sunday in the sermon (you can listen to it here) – Christian maturity is all about the condition and position of the heart.  Christian maturity is about doing – about walking out our faith – and this takes an attitude likened to the attitude of Jesus.

In the Garden of Gethsemane – Jesus showed us the mature heart and attitude – when He struggled with the Father’s will and His earthly will.  Matthew 26:36-39 – 36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”  37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

As we said Sunday – maturing in Christ is all about letting God have more and more of our lives – letting God into each room in our spiritual house and letting God be Lord of each room.  In other words – having the attitude of Christ!  Mature Christians will seek after God’s will – rather than their own.  They will seek after the things that bring God glory – rather than self or others.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
