Where Are Your Treasures?

Matthew 6:20

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

RevRayI was cleaning a closet in my office the other day and I came across some real treasures.  I found my yearbook from High School (40 years ago – ugh) – man have some people aged!  I found my old baseball cards (my retirement plan – lol).  There were some other treasures – like an incense holder – some old letters – some little green army men – some pictures and more.  There would have been some vintage comic books had my little brother not sold them at a yard sale when we were younger.  You know – most of these things that have little actual value (except the baseball cards) but they have sentimental value and you just don’t throw them away.

Today’s passage – a Word from Jesus – in the midst of what some call the Sermon on the Mount.  Let’s read it in partial context – Matthew 6:19-21 – 19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Jesus tells us to not store up treasures on earth – because earthly treasures are temporal – they can be eaten by insects – destroyed by the elements or stolen.  Instead we are to store up treasures with God in heaven – the treasures of our good works and acts of faith.  Trusting in God for our treasures and their care is better than what the world can offer.

At this point a very familiar passage ends this three verse set – For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.  Hear what Jesus is saying – is our heart set on temporal earthly treasures or on treasures in heaven?  Is our heart looking for something here or in eternity?  Are we so earthly bound that we are no heavenly good?  (I like it this way – backwards from what some say.)  Where is your heart today?

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
