Obey the Lord

Luke 6:46

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?”

profileAs a parent of three daughters – I know full well that our children do not always do as we say.  My children were very good children growing up – but indeed they didn’t listen all the time for sure.

As a child myself – I remember some parents saying do as I say – not as I do and that didn’t go over very well with our generation (I imagine it has never gone over very well).  If we want our children to obey us we need to do as we say!

The relationship we have with God is Father/Parent and child – shown to us several times in the Scriptures.  Jesus was telling His disciples about those who listened to His teaching.  Today’s passage comes from a section where Jesus is teaching about the wise and foolish builders.  Here is today’s passage in partial context.  Luke 6:46-49 – 46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

I know a number of people who believe the Bible to be the Word of God.  I know a number of people who would say that God’s commands are for us to follow.  But I also know a number of people who have a hard time following those words/teachings (myself included at times).

Hearing the Word of God and obeying the Word of God are two different things.  How many times have you left a worship service or spiritual conference convicted to make changes in your life – in your spiritual life – only to be talked out of it by time – yourself – or even Satan?  The passage today reminds us what we are like when we hear the Word of God and do not build upon it.  But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.

Take heed my dear readers.  God is a God of grace – but God is also a jealous God – a righteous God – and the path we pick to walk is the path He will allow us to follow.  If we continue to hear His Word and foolishly find reasons not to follow it – when the storms of life come – our house of faith will not stand.  It will be washed away in the storm!

On the other hand – if we hear His Word and put it into practice in our lives – our house of faith will stand the storms of life.  As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like.  They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.  Obey the Lord – build your spiritual house upon the rock that is Jesus Christ and when the storms come – you faith will stand.  Think about it dear readers.  Why do we call Him Lord – Lord – and yet fail at times to obey Him?  Let us remove the sin of self and doubt and obey the Lord!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.

  1. I struggle with obedience Pastor. Like Paul I know what to do but do not always do it. Like you I am thankful for grace. Thanks for the reminder to strive to walk in obedience.

    • Mary – good to hear from you. It has been a while. Glad to know you are still reading the blog. Being obedient to God is a struggle at times – as Satan pulls and tugs at us constantly. i like the reference to Paul – his I do what I do not want to do passage (Romans 7:15 – I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.) Keep striving and seek His face – while desiring His grace.
