Justified Through Faith

Romans 5:1

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

profileI remember collecting pop bottles as a child.  We would roam the community and pick up the empties people threw out their windows.  In our wagon we would collect as a many as we could carry or as many as we could find.  We would take them to the store or gas station where they sold pop.  We would get 2 cents for every bottle we collected.  The store owner/worker would count up the bottles – make sure they were bottles he serviced and make an accounting of how much he owed us.  If we had bottles he couldn’t return to his distributor – he would not count them and we had to take them back.  In turn we would take the money we got for the pop bottles and buy candy and pop from him.

I remember counting in my head as we approached the store – just how much my efforts had earned me that day and how much candy I could buy.  I use to buy baseball cards with my money – if I remember correctly I could get five cards and a large piece of bazooka bubble gum for a nickel.  It was my first job – if you want to call it that – a time when my work (picking up the bottles) resulted in a payback.

I used that example to start with because I wanted us to get the sense of working for something and getting a payback or our just rewards.  The Bible tells us – for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).  We have all sinned – not a one of us is perfect.  We’ve also earned something with our sin – for the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23).  So our labor – our sin – has pocketed us a reward – a payment – death.  We have all sinned and we all have earned our just reward – death.  This death can be seen as physical death – I believe had Adam and Eve or any of humanity since them not sinned – we would be living for eternity on earth.  It can also be seen as a spiritual death – a separation between God and us.  A cavern of sin lies between us.

If you finish Romans 6:23 – it reads like this – For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  This goes along with today’s passage – Romans 5:1 – Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Someone once told me that justification is like God taking your just reward and making you just as if you had never sinned.

I know what it is to earn something – I found that out at an early age.  Using that knowledge – I also know what it is to get a just reward or payment.  Through my study of the Word I know that I have earned death – physical and spiritual.  I also know – praise God – that through Christ I have forgiveness of my sins – my debt has been paid.  Because of Christ I have been made – before the Father – just as if I had never sinned.  Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Praise God and hallelujah.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
