Actions Speak Louder than Words

1 John 3:18

Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. NIV84

profileLove is a verb – have you ever heard that phrase?  After 33 years of marriage and nearly 40 years of ministry I have learned that words can be cheap and actions speak louder than words. The same can be true about expressing our faith.  James – the brother of Jesus – wrote – James 2:15-17 – 15 Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. NIV84

A person can say many things – and some do – with lies and truths blended in so you have a hard time telling the difference.  But often their actions reveal the truth.

For young men and newly married men – let me say that my wife says picking up after myself shows her more love than a hundred verbal I love yous.  Making the bed speaks louder than all the verbal sweet talk.  Now maybe her love language includes acts of service but I would imagine that many wives would appreciate actions over words.  While on the subject – they appreciate things more when it is obvious you took the time to think about them and had went out of your way to accomplish whatever you planned a lot more than getting you assistant to do it.  Seems like a no-brainer but so many men don’t get it!  It is the thought that counts not the actual whatever!

Today’s passage talks about actions rather than merely words.  Here it is in partial context.  1 John 3:14-18 – 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15 Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him. 16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. NIV84

Remember – actions speak louder than words!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
