Seek His Face and Desire His Grace

1 Chronicles 16:11

Study God and his strength, seek his presence day and night; The Message

profileHere we sit – facing another government shutdown.  A number of my friends and a number of the folks I know are being furloughed without pay.  Not sure how long some of them will be able to go without a paycheck.  Some folks don’t have a savings – for a variety of reasons – some beyond their control and some by their own decisions.  Either way – it may be a tough fall if the shutdown lasts for any length of time for sure.

Where will we find help?  We could spend this time debating politics and blaming first one side of the debate and than the other side.  We could blame the President and then all the Presidents men and women.  There surely is enough blame to go around.  What I’d like for us to do is realize that things are going to go from bad to worse as the age rolls along.  There will be wars and rumors of wars.  There will be corrupt governments and corrupt people.  The world is headed down a road toward total destruction – if and only if God doesn’t intervene.

I posted this passage on Facebook yesterday.  2 Chronicles 7:14 – if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.  NIV11 I for one believe that the Bible addresses everything we will ever face in life.  It may not use the contemporary names we call things today – but there is nothing new under the sun!

Today’s passage gives us another timeless truth – 1 Chronicles 16:11 – Study God and his strength, seek his presence day and night; The Message.  One of my favorite sayings – that I believe I made up – goes something like that passage – seek His face – while desiring His grace.  If we (as individuals and collectively as a nation) would only seek after God He would not only heal our land (2 Chronicles 7:14) but He would give us such wisdom – James 1:5 – If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. NIV84

Folks – don’t count on the government to supply what you need!  Don’t count on the world to provide your needs either.  Seek the face of God – and God alone!  I believe that many – if not most – Christians in America are flirting with their faith.  Many are going through the motions – even superficially paying homage to God.  I know – that is a strong statement.  But be honest with yourself (and I will be with myself).  Salvation is free but the proof that we are saved is our love for God.  Do we love God with all our mind – soul – body and strength (the Greatest Commandment – Mark 12:30)?  Can we honestly say that we love God with all we have and all that we are – really?  Are we able to say we are even striving to do this?

Be honest today.  What scares you more – going a couple of weeks without a paycheck or facing the truth – that maybe – just maybe – things could be better for us and for our nation/world if we loved God more?

If you are off a week or two or several weeks – spend that time seeking His face – and desiring His grace.  Find other work if you need to do so – but start trusting in God rather than in the government or a paycheck.  Jesus tells us these words for comfort – Matthew 6:25-34 – 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. NIV84

Place your trust in Jesus – the God of the Universe.  All things were made through Him and nothing that was made was made without Him (paraphrase of John 1:3).  Seek His face and Desires His grace today and even after you get your paycheck back!  Get serious about your faith – get serious about your love of God.  Live your faith!  Walk it as well as we talk it!  Seek His face and desire His grace!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
