The Lord Willing

Proverbs 16:9

In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps. NIV84

profileI’ve used a phrase most of my life – when I’ve told someone I would be somewhere or do a certain thing.  That phrase goes like this – I will see you Sunday – the Lord willing and the creek don’t rise.   Being a lad from West Virginia and Southern Anne Arundel County, Maryland most of my life I often took the last part of the phrase to mean – when the creek (small river or stream) doesn’t rise and take out or block the road.  Certainly the creeks rise and fall with the rains and with the winter snows melting and they can block the roads for sure.  Someone recently told me that the original meaning of the last part of that phrase meant – and the Creek Indians don’t rise.  Either way – it is an acknowledgement that something could get in the way – the creek rising and taking out the road or the Creek rising and on the warpath.

The first part of that phrase is where we want to send most of our time today – the Lord willing.  Today’s proverb reads – In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps NIV84.  Basically we’re saying – if the Lord has other plans – I won’t be able to do what I am stating I will do – the Lord willing and the creek don’t rise.

How can we know the will of God?  An age old question that many ask.  How can we know if the Lord wants us to do a certain thing or not?  How can we know what would please God and what wouldn’t?  How can we make this statement – the Lord willing – and be confident the Lord would will us to do a certain thing?

Dad gave me simple advice as a youth.  Dad often said – if you have to ask (whether something was a sin or not) it is probably a sin.  In other words – most often the will of God – the things we should be doing – are pretty clear and the sins of life are also.  But maybe you’d like something more to hang your hat on than a saying from my dad.  How about scripture?  Here’s one that gives a clear path to God’s will.  Romans 12:1-2 – 1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God — this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will. NIV84

Let me phrase this or paraphrase this for us today.  Deny self and worship God – do not conform to the ways of the world – but rather seek His face and desire His grace – and you will know the will of God.  We get ourselves in trouble when we begin to rationalize!  When we begin to figure out ways to do what we want to do – even though every fiber of our spiritual being is shouting to stay away!

So – the Lord willing – I will do what God desires of me.  Unless He returns for His church – or for me when I die – I will strive to do the will of God.  Make that your prayer this morning and each morning.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
