The Battle Belongs to God

2 Chronicles 20:15c

For the battle is not yours, but God’s. NIV84

profileSome of us have a tendency to take everything personal and some of us try to tackle everything ourselves.  For instance – God tells us to give Him our burdens and we take them back.  Matthew 11:28-30 – 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” NIV84 What seems to happen all too often is we offer our burdens to God only to take them up again as we get off our knees.  We try to leave them at the altar rail only to pick them up again as we rise.

We’re reminded often in Scripture that our battle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual foes.  Ephesians 6:12 – For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. NIV84  We cannot fight the fight against a spiritual foe with human means.

Here’s today’s passage in partial context.  2 Chronicles 20:15-17 – 15 He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. 16 Tomorrow march down against them. They will be climbing up by the Pass of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the gorge in the Desert of Jeruel. 17 You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.'” NIV84  The King was merely told to line up for battle – but that the battle would be the Lord’s.  Stand firm – take up your place for battle – but the battle will be won for you!

God wants us to be obedient – but He also will be with us and never leave us nor forsake us.  The battle – often times – is the Lord’s and not ours.  We merely need to be faithful – faithful to stand in faith!  The battle is the Lord’s – it belongs to God and we are merely His servants.  Walk by faith today knowing that often times the battle is not only not ours but also has been won already by Jesus on the Cross of Calvary.  God has defeated the one we battle with everyday and He will put him down again in our lives if we let Him.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
