Holy Spirit Power!

Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. NIV84

profileJesus was about to ascend to the Father and He was giving last-minute instructions to His disciples – His followers.  Obviously they were entering uncharted territory.  They had always – up to His crucifixion – had Jesus with them and they had enjoyed having Him back during this period between His resurrection and His ascension.  But Jesus was leaving them again and giving them last-minute words of encouragement.

Here is today’s passage in partial context.  Acts 1:3-9 – 3 After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” 6 So when they met together, they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. NIV84

The Holy Spirit is God with us today as the Father and the Son are in heaven.  The power of the Holy Spirit is what God has given us to handle this life.  Here are some passages that we will address in an upcoming sermon series.  The power of God comes to us today through the Holy Spirit and in order to walk the walk we need to avail ourselves of the Holy Spirit’s power and presence in our lives.  Read these Scriptures and see what it is that God has for us today!

John 14:15-17 – 15 If you love me, you will obey what I command. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. NIV84

1 Corinthians 12:1, 4-7 – 1 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant.  4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. NIV84

Galatians 5:22-25 – 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. NIV84

Look forward to a series coming in 2014 on the Holy Spirit (before or for our pre-Lenten Revival)!  It will help us to see how the Holy Spirit wants to operate in our lives today!  Until that series – read these and other Scriptures on the Holy Spirit and seek His face while desiring His grace!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
