Growing in Grace

2 Peter 3:18

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.

profileAs I grew up – I began to look and act (at times) like my father.  People said we looked alike.  I was named after him.  I was his eldest son.  I prided myself in being my dad’s son.

Another person I tried to emulate – I they have video of me doing it – is Boog Powell.  I had a first baseman’s glove.  I practiced bouncing a ball off the chimney and when all of my balls went down the hill I played with an invisible ball (I made all the stops with that one).  He was my favorite player growing up.  I still enjoy seeing him at Boog’s Barbecue and the ball yard when I go.

Jesus tells us that we are to follow His example.  Paul even tells us to follow him as he follows Christ.  Jesus’ example was to show grace – to show love – to live His life in such a way that He reflected His Father.  At the Last Supper He washed His disciples’ feet – a task that only the lowest servant would do in a normal household.  He humbled Himself and told His disciples –John 13:15 – I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

Today’s passage tells us to grow in grace – 2 Peter 3:18 – But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.

It is the close of Peter’s second Epistle.  Here it is in partial context as Peter was giving instructions about the last days – about what the disciples could look forward to in the future.  2 Peter 3:10-18 – 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. 11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness. 14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. 15 Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. 16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. 17 Therefore, dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position. 18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.

As the days mount – let’s pick Jesus to emulate and model our lives after – as we grow in grace and knowledge of Christ!  Follow His lead as we prepare to meet Him face-to-face.  My earthly father is there now and I plan to join him some day.  I also desire to grow in grace as I strive to model Jesus in my life.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.

  1. Boog Powell was one of my favs when we grew up as well. I threw right handed, hit left handed and was named John so it seemed pretty parallel.

    • I did the same John – threw right-handed and batted left-handed – but my name wasn’t John or Boog…
