Gods of Gold

Exodus 32:31

So Moses went back to the Lord and said, “Oh, what a great sin these people have committed! They have made themselves gods of gold.”

profileJesus said the greatest commandment was – Mark 12:30 – Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.  But do we?  I mean – do we love God with everything we have and everything we are?  If we were honest – as much as we might like to love God with our all – we tend to love other things more than God at times.

Whenever we sin we have – for at least that moment – loved something more than we love God.  What is it that we love?  We love self-pleasure.  We look out for number one far too often.  We love ourselves far more than we should for sure.

Jesus said that our love for God should be greater than our love for anyone of anything – Matthew 10:37-39 – 37 Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38 and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.  We can love others and we should.  We can love family and we should.  We can even appreciate things – but we must love God more than these.

The people of God in our passage for today were more concerned with the perceived danger they felt in the wilderness than loving and serving God.  They had more faith in the gods of Egypt than God – the only real god.  They lacked patience waiting for Moses to return from Mt. Sinai and they persuaded Aaron to form for them a god of gold.  They worshiped an idol rather than God.

So what are our gods?  Do we love things more than God?  Do we love self more than God?  Think about that this morning as we ask God to forgive us for the times we have not been faithful to Him.  Seek His face as we desire His grace.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
