Outdoing One Another in Showing Honor

Romans 12:10

Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. ESV

profileI remember hearing Pastor Wellington Boone say at a revival some years ago that he would never let his wife out love him.  He was speaking about being a godly man – a godly husband.   He caught my attention.  He was talking about serving his wife and giving her love as Christ gives love.  He said if she gets up early to serve me and have to get up earlier the next morning to serve her.  It wasn’t a competition – yet it was – if that is what motivated him or us.  He said his wife was not his momma.  Maybe his momma served him – but he wasn’t going to let his wife out serve him.

Today’s passage – from the ESV Bible (English Standard Version) – says something similar.  Romans 12:10 – Love one another with brotherly affection.  Outdo one another in showing honor. ESV Here is today’s passage in partial context.  Romans 12:9-21 – 9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.  10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be conceited. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. ESV

So sisters and brothers – who are we showing honor to today?  Who are we encouraging?  Who are we lifting up and holding before God in prayer?  Love one another with brotherly affection.  Outdo one another in showing honor.  Think today about ways you can show others honor.  Show you spouse honor.  Show your children honor.  Show you co-workers honor.  Show you boss or your employees honor.  Show your teacher or your students honor.  Do not let anyone outdo you in showing honor.  The God who sees everything will take notice for sure!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
