God’s Design for Marriage – One Man and One Woman

Matthew 19:4-5

4 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’  5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?

profileYesterday we wrote about the authority of Scripture – how Scripture was primary in our understanding of God and God’s will.  You can read yesterday’s post here.  We had to build the groundwork of Scripture in order to move forward in an orderly fashion.  Too many people seem to have a low regard for Scripture while others of us see it as inspired – inerrant – and infallible.

Today’s subject – as seen through Scripture – is marriage.  We live in a world that has a variety of ideas about marriage and a variety of ideas pertaining to who can get married.  The secular definition of marriage is contrary to the orthodox view of marriage.  Divorce – for instance – seems to be all the rage in some circles with a divorce rate around 50% of current marriages.  This – in my humble reading of the Bible – is not God’s plan for marriage.  God hates divorce we’re told in Malachi 2:16.

Who can marry has also been in the secular discussion.  In our state two persons of the same-sex can be married – which – in my understanding of Scripture – is not God’s plan at all.  Of course the society can affirm whatever it wishes.  Having said that I also must remind Christians that we are not to follow the world’s thinking but search out the Scriptures for what is right and godly.  We are to follow God’s plan – not a plan that has been developed by a godless society in many cases.  Romans 12:2 – Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Let’s take a look at marriage through Scripture.  I will use one long discourse on marriage from our Lord’s own words instead of listing the many passages that speak about marriage.  Matthew 19:3-12 – 3 Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?” 4 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’  5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?  6 So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.” 7 “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?” 8 Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery.” 10 The disciples said to him, “If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry.” 11 Jesus replied, “Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. 12 For some are eunuchs because they were born that way; others were made that way by men; and others have renounced marriage because of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.”

In our Lord’s own words the plan for marriage in God’s design is between one man and one women and the two shall become one flesh.  A man and a woman are to marry and from the beginning – it was not God’s plan for them to divorce.  Jesus also says that not everyone will be able to accept this teaching – that marriage is between only one man and one woman and that they are not to divorce.  He says – Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. For some are eunuchs because they were born that way; others were made that way by men; and others have renounced marriage because of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.”

The plan – according to scripture – and our Lord’s own words – as recorded by the apostle Matthew – is for one man and one woman to marry and to remain married.  If some cannot accept this teaching – they are to remain single.

According to the United Methodist Church – marriage is between one man and one woman – in line with God’s Word.  The UMC also says that we should practice celibacy in singleness and fidelity in marriage – which is also in line with the scriptures.  Yet we have clergy and laity alike trying to alter the church’s stance.  It makes little sense when using scripture as primary in our decision-making – in my humble opinion.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way!
