Go and Sin No More

John 8:10-11

10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

profileThe woman was brought before Jesus.  She had been caught in adultery – which according to the law – required punishment.  They brought the stones with them.  They probably circled her or lined up against her.  They were an angry mob and they wanted blood.

They brought her before Jesus and wanted Him to tell them to kill her for her sin – according to the law.  Instead – if you remember the story well – Jesus began to write on the ground.  Might have been sandy soil and he wrote in the sand.  Lots of pastors have guessed at what He wrote.  Maybe it was the sins of the people who surrounded the woman.  Maybe as they peered over His shoulder or walked over to see what He was writing they saw their own sin.

Jesus told them – if you remember the story – for the one without sin to cast the first stone.  Here is the story in partial context.  John 8:3-11 – 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”  8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

As I have written the last few days about the primacy of scriptureGod’s design for marriage – one man and one woman – and yesterday – about being ashamed of the Gospel – my intent has never been to point out one sin over another.  We are all sinners – we have all fallen short of God’s mark – God’s glory .  The reason I have written was to make the case that we must confess our sins and turn from them.  We cannot expect God to accept us simply because we feel or think a certain way.  We must follow scripture and not our own thoughts or even the thoughts of some well-meaning pastors.

Jesus words to the woman caught in adultery – Go now and leave your life of sin – needs to be heard by us all today.  Said another way in another translation – we all need to go and sin no more.

So what sin are you/we hiding behind your/our rationalization?  Behind your/our reason and personal experience?  Confess and repent and seek His face while desiring His grace!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
