Rooted and Built Up in Christ

Colossians 2:6-7

6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

profileIt feels like snow this morning – although none is called for in our area.  I’m thinking of firing up the wood stove for some extra heat.  I have some gospel music playing and I’m at my desk doing my devotions and writing this devotional thought.

I stumbled onto this passage and it touched my heart.  Let’s look at it in partial context.  Colossians 2:6-10 – 6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.  8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. 9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority.

As we pass Thanksgiving and head toward Christmas – the world will try to convince us that it is all about spending – spending – spending.  They will try to convince us that if we don’t buy a certain gift for our children we are less than adequate as parents.  The world will try to convince us that we will be more attractive to the opposite sex if we wear certain things or buy certain things.  For the world – Christmas is all about the almighty dollar.

When I asked the children last Sunday what holiday was coming – they skipped over Thanksgiving and said Christmas.  When asked what was so important about Christmas they responding with getting gifts and that Santa Claus was coming.  I imagine we will see him in a number of Thanksgiving parades.  The world is tied to the almighty dollar.

But today’s passage reminds us that not only Christmas but all of life really finds its meaning in Jesus – rooted and built up in him.

We often quote verse 8See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.  This section of scripture is so important – not just for sound doctrine but for the marching orders of life.  Our life – as aliens on this earth – is to be focused on Jesus – rooted and grounded in Him.  We are to build our holidays – our regular days – our whole life after His example and His teachings.

Remember this as Christmas rolls around this year.  Remember these words of wisdom – DO NOT GO INTO DEBT FOR CHRISTMAS!  Rather – focus your family on Jesus – rooted and built up in him.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.

  1. I wish someone would have given me that truth when my children were young. Focusing on Jesus at Christmas instead of the gifts would have been so much better. My children are so materialistic and I blame myself.
