The Holy Spirit Will Come Upon You

Luke 1:35

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”

profileThere are loads of passages in the Bible about the Holy Spirit.  As the Christmas story begins to unfold – we read about the Holy Spirit coming upon Mary.

Have you ever experienced the Holy Spirit coming upon you?  There is some discussion in the church about the Holy Spirit.  Some believe the Holy Spirit comes upon us when we receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior – and indeed I believe that too.  But the fullness of the Holy Spirit is said to come at the Baptism of the Holy Spirit – which can be at the same time as our conversion/baptism – sometime later – or for some Christian – not at all.

We have a sermon series coming in 2014 where we will address some of questions about the Holy Spirit.  I’m looking forward to that series.  Today’s passage is about the Holy Spirit coming upon Mary.  Mary was surprised to hear the words the angel said to her in today’s passage.  Here are the angel’s words in partial context. Luke 1:26-35 – 26 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”  29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”  34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”  35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

As we prepare for Christmas – this is a very familiar passage from the Christmas story.  It was in a super-natural way that the Holy Spirit came upon Mary.  Theologically – it is the basis for Jesus being born the second Adam – not marred by original sin because He wasn’t born from the seed of Joseph – but the seed planted in Mary by the Holy Spirit.  It is an amazing story for sure – how the Holy Spirit came upon her.

Has the Holy Spirit come upon you?  Not in the way He came upon Mary of course – there is only one Virgin Birth – but in other ways – no less miraculous as the Holy Spirit comes upon us in a super-natural way.  The Holy Spirit is still in the business of doing the super-natural!  I can’t wait till 2014 and the sermon series on the Holy Spirit.  Maybe some of the example you share will help me prepare for that series.  Share how the Holy Spirit has come upon you!  I would love to read your experiences.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
