God’s Love

John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.

profileWhen Shelly – our oldest – was born – I believe if I had been put in the situation – I would have given my life in exchange for hers (thank God I was never in that situation).  I would do the same for my wife and all three of my daughters I believe (we never know what we might do – really – until we are actually faced with situations).

If you expanded that circle I might include a few family members and even a few close friends – but the circle wouldn’t be too wide.  What would you be willing to do for a friend?  Would your circle be wide or small?

What about those who are outside that circle?  You might not exchange your life for some of them but you might go out of your way to help them if they were in need.  That circle might be a little larger than the first circle.  Your circles probably would expand as you lessened the demand – what would be required of you.

Jesus says – greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.  Yet we’re also give passages like Romans 5:8 – But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Now that is a love we have a hard time understanding.  Love our children we understand.  Loving those we love and who love us we understand.  Even loving – to an extent – some friends is special.  But loving our enemies?  Wow.

When I think of today’s passage I also think of the military and the police – fire – and rescue folks.  They often put their life on the line for their fellow citizens.  Now that is a measure of love for sure.  But even those brave men and women would have a hard time laying down their life for their enemy.  Such amazing love God has for us.  As you give thanks tomorrow around the family table remember to thank God for His love for us.  Also thank God for those who place their life in harms way for us everyday.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
