Give Thanks – And Don’t Worry

Matthew 6:34

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. NIV84

profileSuch catch phrase as what, me worry or don’t worry, be happy have graced our airways over the years.  The world knows all about worry and how many of us suffer with it.  On Thanksgiving Morning – while some of us are freezing ourselves on the Turkey Trot to support LARS – what are you worried about or what are you anxious about?

Another translation of this passage reads this way – Matthew 6:34 – “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. ESV Worry and anxiousness are interchangeable it seems.

So what are we anxious about or worried about?  Is it our health – let’s give it over to God.  Is it our economics or lack thereof – let’s give it over to God.  Is it a relationship – like your marriage or a friendship – let’s give it over to God.  Let me explain.  Giving something over to God doesn’t mean we sit back and watch God.  It doesn’t mean we will sit back and trust God to do it all for us.  What it means is that as we strive to do our best – and doing our best is an important key – we will give our worry and anxiousness over to God.

Jesus said – Matthew 11:28-30 – 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” NIV84

On this Thanksgiving – let’s give thanks to God that He allows us a peace that passes all understanding.  That God wants to help carry our burdens and make our way a little lighter for sure.  Give thanks and worry less!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.

  1. Why worry about the future? It’s in God’s hands. Since He’s been faithful in the past, is with us now and in the future, why have any doubts that God will let us down. He won’t, if, as you wisely pointed out, we keep Him at the center of our lives and follow His way, not ours. No matter what happens, good or bad, we cannot drift beyond God’s love and care. Worry is fruitless.”Those who fear the future are likely to fumble the present,” say the Amish. Thank you for writing these thoughts, Ray, you’re making a difference for the better, my friend! 🙂
