Attitude Check at Advent

Philippians 2:5

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

profileAdvent is here and Christmas is only about three weeks away.  Are you excited yet?  What do you do to prepare for the Christmas season?  A niece of mine recently showed a picture of Facebook of dozens and dozens of Christmas cookies that her family (and extended family) baked together.  It is a family tradition for her husband’s family.  They certainly looked good.  I will try to resist cookies this Christmas season – lol.

What do you do to prepare for Christmas?  What do you do in this time of waiting and anticipating (Advent)?  Were you active on Cyber Monday shopping online yesterday?  Now they call this whole week Cyber Week – so if you missed yesterday you can catch up today.  Have you hit the Malls yet?  Have you baked some cookies?  Have you planned your parties and the ones you will attend?  Have you picked out that perfect gift for your loved ones?

As the secular festivities are planned and continue – please do not forget that Jesus is the reason for the season.  It is His birth that we celebrate – even if the world doesn’t accept Him.  As Christians – we should keep at bay the secular festivities – keeping them in their proper place – and remember and celebrate Jesus!

It always helps me to remember that Jesus made a decision to come to earth as the Word made flesh.  It was a willful decision of God to come to earth as a babe in a manger and to live His life and give His life for us.

God’s Word coming through Paul speaks to me during Christmas.  Philippians 2:5-7 – 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

So what is our attitude at Christmas?  Are we caught up in the secular so much so that we forget the real reason for Christmas?  Do we take Christ out of Christmas by using Xmas as a shorthand for Christmas in our e-mails or letters?  Think about it.  Is Jesus the center of your thoughts during this time of the year?  If not – shouldn’t they be?  Do an attitude check as we move through Advent and celebrate Christmas this year.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.

P.S. – Happy Birthday to my loving wife!  I am so blessed to share life with you.
