The Strong Tower

Proverbs 18:10

The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.

profileOK – here we go again – Christmas is almost here.  Just a few more days to go.  Have you finished your shopping?  I found something for my wife today – and I hope she likes it!  She does such a wonderful job with the Christmas shopping – all I need to do it get her something!

Yesterday some things happened in the news that got some people riled up and many of them aired their thoughts on Facebook.  My news feed was filled with posts and comments about two news items in particular.  It was amusing at times to read them and at times it was sad.

One was a news item from the United Methodist Church.  Frank Schaefer – a former United Methodist pastor – was defrocked for breaking church law.  He performed a same-sex marriage in PA and said he would do it again.  According to the Book of Discipline – not to mention the Bible – the United Methodist Church believes that homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching and that United Methodist pastors and churches should not perform or host same-sex marriages/unions.  Frank disagreed – as do a minority of United Methodist pastors and laypersons according to the votes during the last 10 General Conferences (over 42 years) – and because of it he was defrocked – which means his ordination has been revoked by the United Methodist Church.

The second news item was on the same issue but from the other side of the discussion.  Phil Robertson – of Duck Dynasty fame – gave an interview to Gentleman’s Quarterly (GQ) and in it called homosexuality behavior a sin and with his crude way gave his opinion about the subject and a few others too.  His view on homosexuality – which is and has been the view of Orthodox Christianity for thousands of years – disturbed A&E so much (they had liberal groups complaining to them) that they indefinitely suspended Phil from filming his family show.  The same TV station that gives us shows like Bonnie & Clyde, Rodeo Girls, Crazy Hearts: Nashville and other shows decided Phil said something that offended them.

OK – so where were we – oh yeah – Proverbs 18:10 – The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.  Throughout the day people were getting bent out of shape – on both sides of the discussion – upset that Frank was defrocked – upset that Phil was suspended – or glad Frank was defrocked and glad that Phil was suspended.  People were claiming that our freedom of speech was being taken away.  People were afraid that society was destroying the church or that the church needed to change with society.  People were concerned with Christian values and more.  People were focusing on our society rather than on Jesus in my humble opinion.

Bottom line dear readers – and I come to this passage more often is seems as the world beats a path to hell and the Christian church is facing more persecution – Jesus warned His disciples – the church – some 2,000 plus years ago with these words – John 15:18-19 – 18 “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.”

If we expect the world – society – to accept Biblical truth or to allow the church to stand opposed to the sinfulness of the world without push-back – wake up and smell the coffee.  Were seeing the push-back within the church as well as society make inroads.  For at least four decades I have been saying that if not in our lifetime – very shortly thereafter – the Christian church in America will face heavy persecution.  It will soon be illegal to hold to Orthodox Christian doctrines and beliefs and it will be a crime to speak Biblical truths publicly – even from our pulpits.

We have only one place to run dear readers – only one place to turn – Proverbs 18:10 – The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.  As I’ve said for years – we must seek His face and desire His grace.  We must stand up and be counted – even if it means imprisonment or death.  Run to Jesus!  Run to His arms.  Persevere and be faithful to the Lord and His word – the Holy Bible.  The strong tower is Jesus.  The only place to find salvation is Jesus.  The only place to run is to Jesus!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.

  1. Excellent post, Ray. I’ve seen these changes coming from society. The church that marries its values to society’s will be a widow in the next, for sure and for certain.
