The Greatest Gift this Christmas

Ephesians 2:8-9

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. ESV

profileI hope that through the Holidays – Christmas and New Years – you got the gifts you wanted.  I ended up getting a Maryland Jacket – a fleece pullover – a sweater vest – a picture of one of my grandchildren for my office – a Ravens sweatshirt/tee shirt combo and two very nice pictures of our granddaughters for our home.  I’ve probably forgotten something – but not on purpose.

What did you get?  What did you give?  Hopefully you remembered – during all of the giving and getting – that Jesus is the reason for the season.

As the tree and decorations are taken down this week or whenever your family does this task – remember – the greatest gift is Jesus Christ – the babe in the manger that became the man on the cross – who was dead and buried and rise again to give us victory over our sins and the grave.

Today’s passage reminds me that the gift of Christ keeps on giving.  Some gifts that we got on Christmas morning/day are probably already put away and forgotten or broken and in the trash.  But the gift of Christ keeps on giving.  Today’s passage reminds of this ever active and giving gift.  Ephesians 2:8-9 – 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. ESV

We might have deserved some of the gifts we received this Christmas.  I mean – we might have been a good father or mother or child or friend and we gave gifts and received gifts.  But this gift from the Father – from the Son – from the Holy Spirit – is far beyond anything we deserve.  I’ve often said what we deserve is hell but what God offers to those who turn to Jesus is eternal life rather than eternal death.  Have you turned your life over to the Lord?  Have you given your life to Jesus?  If not – 2014 is here and there is no better time than right now!  If you have – live in that faith – in that relationship with Jesus!  In 2014 – share your faith with others so that they can get to know this Jesus who gives so freely – the greatest gift ever!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
