God’s Design for Marriage

Genesis 2:24

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. ESV

You had to know that we wouldn’t get too far into 2014 before we once again addressed God’s design for marriage.  I will suggest later in this post that the real debate is not over the worlds’ view of marriage verses God’s but rather the view of Biblical Authority.

From the very first book in the Bible we see a truth that has been debated in our society and shamefully in our churches as well.  The question for the church is not what does society say about marriage?  The question for the church should be what does God say about marriage?

Throughout the Bible – God’s inspired – inerrant – infallible word – God’s design is clear.  God’s design is for one woman and one man to unite and become one.  Even when some of God’s people got it wrong in the Bible and took multiple wives – God called them back to His design.

Jesus reminds us of the Father’s design as He quotes today’s passage from Genesis 2:24.  Matthew 19:3-9 – 3 And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?” 4 He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female,  5 and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh’?  6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”  7 They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?” 8 He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.  9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.” ESV

The church – in my humble opinion (IMHO) – should have nothing to do with same-sex marriage because it is clearly not of God’s design.  The society we live in may recognize any union it wishes and the voters or courts allow – but the church needs to stand on God’s Word and not the cultural norm.

IMHO the real debate on this and other issues facing the church is Biblical Authority – the place the Bible holds in our understanding of God.  Is it a good book (one extreme) or is it God’s timeless expression of truth?

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
