Are We Lukewarm?

Revelation 3:16

So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.

profileThe last two devotional thoughts I have shared on my blog page have been about wrestling with sin (read them here 1/17 and here 1/20 if you’re interested).  I’m working on a future sermon series by the same name.  Comments are always welcome.

Yesterday – I mentioned that you should stay tuned for today’s devotional thought about being lukewarm.  Let’s look at today’s passage with one extra verse added.  Revelation 3:15-16 – 15 I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot!  16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.

Cold or hot water have some basic benefits but lukewarm water has little use.  Some have preached in the past that God would rather have us cold and against Him rather than lukewarm – riding the fence.  Some have suggested that in the region of Laodicea there were hot and cold springs.  The hot and cold springs each had certain uses – but when the water became lukewarm there was little use for it.

Lukewarm faith is really no faith at all.  When one rides the fence – with one foot on either side – one is not committed to anything.  If we want to follow God but also want to follow the world – we will ultimately lose out because God wants our hearts (remember the greatest commandment?  Mark 12:30 – And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.)

If religion is real it deserves our very best – we should be in earnest about what we believe.  If religion is not real – we should be opposed to it with everything.  If religion is worthy of anything – it is worthy of everything.  If God is God – we should follow Him.  If some idol – some other being is God – we should follow it.

Sunday we quoted Jesus – John 14:15 – If you love me, you will keep my commandments.  If God is real and to be believed – we should adhere to His teaching and not find ourselves lukewarm followers – which would be no follower at all for sure.

As we wrestle with sin we should also determine where our heart is pointed.  Matthew 6:21 – For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.  Are we cold or hot – useful and pointed toward Christ or are we lukewarm and good for nothing?

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
