Rejoice and Weep with Others

Romans 12:15

Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.

profileAre you empathetic?  Are you sympathetic?  Are you compassionate?  Do you feel other people’s pain?  When I mentioned the reaction of a member of our church to the report of shootings at the Columbia Mall this past weekend to my wife – she fully understood her attitude and said she would have done the same thing (her daughter was at the Mall and she sped to the Mall to retrieve her and became excited when security delayed her).

I think most of us had some emotions watching the scene unfold on TV or if we were at the Mall ourselves.  One member was on the other floor from the shooting but at the same section.  Another member reported being 50 yards away from the shooting.

For most of us it doesn’t take much for our hearts to be touched by the emotions of others.  Today’s passage says – Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.

Here is today’s passage in partial context in a section titled Marks of the True Christian in my Bible.  Romans 12:9-21 – 9  Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10  Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12  Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13  Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. 14  Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15  Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16  Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be conceited. 17  Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

As Christians we are supposed to rejoice when folks rejoice and weep when they weep.  Try this today and see what happens in your relationships with others.  Do this instead of being jealous of other folks happiness!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
