Will You Be Ready?

Matthew 24:42

Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.

profileHave you ever been surprised by a drop in visit?  Someone coming by unannounced?  Maybe to your home or maybe at work.  I remember my dad inviting people over for grilled cheese and tomato soup after Sunday night worship on a number of occasions and catching mom off guard.

I heard this story about a new pastor making a home visit.  A new pastor went out one day to visit his parishioners. Everything was going well until he came to one house. He knocked and heard footsteps running down the hall away from the door. He kept knocking but no one answered. Finally, he took out his card and wrote, “Revelation 3:20,” and stuck it in the door and left. This passage says, “Listen! I am standing at the door knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me.” The next Sunday, an usher found that very card in the offering plate and handed it to the Pastor. The Pastor knew where it came from when he saw Revelation 3:20 on it. Under that was written “Genesis 3:10.” The Pastor got out his Bible and read, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

Has anyone ever surprised you with a visit?  Jesus told us to be prepared for His return!  Matthew 24:42 – Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.  Here is today’s passage in partial context – a section titled No One Knows That Day and Hour in my Bible.  Matthew 24:36-44 – 36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.  37  As were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.  38  For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark,  39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.  40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left.  41  Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left.  42 Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.  43  But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into.  44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

Will the coming of Christ – His return – catch you off guard?  Or will you be ready to meet the Lord in the sky when He returns for His church?  Will you be caught unaware and unprepared?  Or will you be ready to meet Jesus?

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
