How Can We Encourage Others?

Hebrews 10:24

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,

profileNext week I’ll be 59 – my last year in my 50’s.  Technically it will be my 60th year – you know – 59 years plus as the days count toward my 60th birthday.  My wife and I are coming up on our 34th wedding anniversary this summer.  Our children will turn 31 and 26 (twins) this spring/summer.  Time marches on.  As we grow to know each other better – we learn what buttons to push in each other’s lives.  We learn what makes us laugh – what makes us cry – what makes us sad – what makes us mad.  As we grow as a family – we have two grandchildren in the family now as well – I imagine we will learn more and more about each other.

Carolyn and I have a dog – his name is Henry.  He sleeps with us (not by my doings by the way).  The more time we spend with Henry the more we know him and the more he knows us.  He knows the difference between the sound my garage door makes and Carolyn’s.  He will not budge from his chair when my door opens but runs to greet Carolyn when her door opens.  I drive him crazy at times by opening her door when I arrive home.  I know – there is a mean streak in me.

The church family is supposed to be like a family.  The more we spend time together the more we should learn about each other.  Some of our family at 1st UMC has been together for generations it seems.  Some of us for less than a year and some for various times in between.  Today’s passage is a call to the church family to encourage one another – and all the more as we see the day approaching.  Here it is in partial context.  Hebrews 10:23-25 – 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Think about it – how can we stir up our fellow family members in the church to love and good works?  How can we encourage them in Christ as the Day draws near?  We will see in the revival that Satan is real and running around trying to discourage us – so how can we encourage others?

I would love to hear some thoughts on how we can encourage one another in the church family to love and good deeds along this journey of life.  What do you think?  How about sharing??  I would start us off by saying the more time we spend together the better we will know each other and the easier it will be to know how to encourage each other.  Remember – the better we know someone the easier it is to know the buttons to push.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.

P.S. – We’re having a revival at First United Methodist Church of Laurel on March 2-5.  Morning services on March 2 are at 8:15 and 11:00 am.  Evening services on Sunday through Wednesday are at 7:00 pm.  The church is located at 424 Main Street – Laurel – MD – 20707.  I hope to see some of our readers at the revival!
