Place God’s Word On Our Hearts

Deuteronomy 6:6

And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.

profileSunday – March 9th – we began our Lenten sermon series – Following Jesus – which runs through April 6th.  You can listen to Sunday’s sermon – The Cost of Following Jesus here.

Sunday we mentioned that the cost of grace was the death of Christ on the cross.  Sermon notes for the message can be found here.

One main point was that grace was free but that there was a cost to us to actuate it in our lives.  Christ died for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:2) but all will not receive this amazing gift.

We mentioned in the sermon that the cost of following Jesus was accepting Jesus as the Lord of our lives – allowing Jesus to be Master of our lives.  This translates into a love relationship with Jesus – where we obey Him because we love Him – rather than because of some rules or law.  Jesus said – John 14:15 – If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

Today’s passage reminds me of today’s teaching.  As God was teaching His people about right and wrong – God wanted these words to be upon their hearts rather than on tablets of stone.  Here is today’s passage in partial context.

Deuteronomy 6:1-9 – 1 “Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the rules that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it, 2 that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long. 3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey. 4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.  5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

As we continue our walk to the cross – let us spend more time placing the Word of God on our hearts and following His teachings more closely.  Let us activate God’s grace in our lives and showing a loving response to our Lord and Savior – Jesus Christ!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
