Something God Hates

Proverbs 6:16,19

The LORD hates… a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

profileOne of my favorite sayings is Christianity boils down to attitude.  I often follow that phrase with the following – Christianity boils down to attitude – the condition and position of one’s heart.  Scripture tell us – Matthew 6:21 – For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Attitude is everything says a little stone marker on my office desk.  I believe that the heart – the attitude we have – is so very important.  Each time I pray for the men who gather to play basketball early in the morning at Southern Middle School – I pray for an attitude check – that our attitudes would be a blessing and not a hinderance to our witness and our exercise.  As Christians we are called to have the attitude of Christ in the scriptures. Philippians 2:5 – Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.

The attitude of Christ would not be to cause dissension among the brothers and sisters for sure.  Do you know anyone that seems to make it their calling to cause dissension in the family of God?  Usually they are never happy – never pleased with what others are doing.  Usually they seem to want their own way – which is always the right way – according to them.  They seem to be gossips and they always seem to be putting their nose into other people’s business.  Do you know anyone like this?  Do we look like this at times?

One of the things that scripture tells us is that God hates men and women who cause dissension in the church – who seem bent on causing trouble wherever they go.  Here is today’s passage in partial context with some other things that God hates. Proverbs 6:16-19 – 16 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

Let’s pray on this passage today and make sure that we are not causing dissension in the church.  Let’s pray that we will work toward unity whenever possible and holiness when we must take a stand.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
