Being a Witness for Christ

Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

profileHave you ever been called as a witness?  A witness is someone having knowledge of truth willing to testify to that truth. We could be called on by a friend to testify – to witness – about something we saw or where we had some personal knowledge – where they were looking for the truth.  We could be called into court – where we would be sworn in – to tell the truth and nothing but the truth.  In days gone by we would even be asked to say – so help me God – as we were being sworn in before we witnessed – before we testified.  It is a real shame that our country seems bent on taking God out of everything – but that is another devotional thought altogether.

Today’s passage is where Jesus was instructing His disciples – His followers – to be His witnesses throughout the world – to the ends of the earth. The Greek word for witness used here is martys or martyr.  We often think of a martyr as someone willing to go to their death for their message – to sacrifice for the truth.  Many of the early Christians were witnesses – martyrs – for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Many went to their death for the Gospel message!

The first martyr – or witness – according to Scripture – was Stephen. Here is part of his story.  Acts 7:54–58 – 54 When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” 57 At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58 dragged him out of the city and began to stone him.

Acts 1:8 – But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. So where are we called to witness for Jesus?  The first Disciples were called to witness to all the ends of the earth.  So where are we called to witness?

Sunday is Friend’s Day at our church – we could start by simply inviting someone to join us for worship this Sunday.  The Evangelism Coach told us last Saturday that one of the best ways to witness is to build relationships with people. Where are we investing our time for Jesus? Who are we praying for and spending time with so that we can witness our faith? What are we willing to do – to sacrifice – for Jesus?  Have we ever been called as a witness? A witness is someone having knowledge of truth willing to testify to that truth. Do we know Jesus? Do we tell others about the relationship we have with Jesus?  Being a witness for Christ is what we are called to do.  Being a witness is what we should all feel compelled to do – because of His overwhelming love – which we have experienced!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
