The Word of God Will Never Pass Away

Matthew 24:35

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

profileOK – so we’re getting ready for the Final Four and Major League Baseball is underway.  As I’m writing this devotional thought the Maryland Lady Terps are in the Elite Eight. Is your favorite team still playing in college basketball?

I don’t believe anyone is going to win the Billion Dollar prize Warren Buffett offered for a perfect bracket for the Men’s tournament.  Some of my friends say they still have 3 of their 4 left in the final four for the men.  Interesting!

I just read ESPN’s predictions for this year’s baseball season and only one or two had my team making the playoffs. Oh well – someone had to be right even though the rest are wrong.  I will keep up with my team this year by reading School of Roch – the blog page of Roch Kubatko – all season to keep up with the O’s.  I’ve predicted 92 wins and the playoffs for the Baltimore Orioles – just saying.

Is there anything that is a sure thing – a sure bet?  I mean – doesn’t betting imply that you could win or lose?  They don’t have those big palaces with fancy chandeliers in Vegas for losing.   They have made millions – even billions – from people who though they were right – even betted they were right – only to lose everything.

Today’s passage gives us a sure thing.  Matthew 24:35 – Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.  The word heaven here refers to the sky. Although the same Greek word (ho) is translated the sky and heaven – here it is clear that it refers to the sky.  The sky (the heavens) and earth will pass away but the Word of God will never pass away.

We would have a hard time believing that the sky and earth will vanish or be no more. Even those who believe in Global Warming would have a hard time believing that this would disappear. Maybe they would change. Maybe the snowcaps would melt. Maybe the radiation from the sun would eat through the atmosphere weakened by pollution.  Maybe the world as we know it will come to an end. But pass away? Maybe this is referring to passing away as we know them today. Anyway – the sky/heavens and the earth will pass away Jesus says – but the Word of God will never pass away.

The Word of God is a sure thing! Being students of the Word of God seems like a wise move.  Many study the environment – and we should.  Many study humanity and culture – and we should.  Many spend years and thousands of dollars on an education is one field or the other to be able to make a difference in this world and to make a living – and we should.  How about spending more time today – and more time tomorrow – searching the Word of God? How about becoming students of that which will never change?  How about spending more time getting to know the truth that never changes – even as the culture around us changes?  The Word of God will never pass away.  Let’s become students of the Word of God and not leave it up to others to explain it to us. What do you think?

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
