Fathers – Reflect Jesus!

Ephesians 6:4

Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

DadAs a father – I had a hand in raising/rearing three daughters and many of their friends too. Although their mother had the biggest hand in their upbringing – I played a part in it – and because our children were very social and loved their home and parents – we were honored to be part of many of their friend’s lives too.  It was a blessing to see so many of their friends in and out of our home.  We felt like parents to a large family at times.

Some of their friends attended our church. Some were on the same teams that we coached. Some were simply friends that hung out at our home from time to time. In each case – God gave us an opportunity to touch their lives – to speak into their spirits. I pray that we took correct advantage of each opportunity. I know Carolyn and I would be there for any of our children’s friends – when and if we were called upon – and a number of times we have been called upon.

As a father – with Father’s Day just passed – I reflect upon how I did as a father. I wasn’t always present like I should have been. I’m so thankful that my wife was present – though that doesn’t excuse me for the times I was absent.  I also reflect upon my father – and how he modeled for me being a father.  My dad – pictured in the photo today – was a great father.  I miss him so.

More important than being a good provider for my family – which I tried hard to be – was how I reflected Christ to them (I pray they could see Jesus in me in spite of my sins and failures). I pray that between their mother and me we witnessed our faith in and love for Jesus in such a way that left a mark on them – a good mark – one that draws them even to this day closer to Jesus.

Ephesians 6:4 – Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. Good instructions for fathers and mothers – as we raise/rear our children and grandchildren – may we always reflect Jesus to them.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
