Being Present

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

20140530-104833-38913743.jpgBeing present is more important than one might imagine. Our children have appreciated that their mother has been very present in their lives. They will talk to her about most anything – because she has proven faithful and always present. They have built a great relationship – because their mother has always been present.

I tried to be present – attending all of the school functions I could and their games and horse shows when possible. I tried to be present – but wasn’t always present – like their mom. Our relationship is good but not as good as the relationship they have with their mom.

You can say several things to try and explain this – like – one parent was able to be present because the other parent was off making a living so the other parent could stay at home while the children were young. You could say the girls – all three of our children are girls – bonded better with their mother because they’re all girls. You could say a number of things – but the bottom line is their mom was present – much more than I was present.

Today’s passage talks about God being ever-present in our lives. It is this desire to build relationship with us that makes our relationship with God so unique. Of course – some of us know what it is like to want to be present – only to have our children not want us to be present. I wonder if God feels that way with us? God so desires to be present with us – in all things – in all ways – and yet at times we quench the Spirit – at times we resist building a relationship with God.

Here is today’s passage in partial context. Psalm 46:1–3 – 1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.

Our girls always know that their mom will be there for them (I hope they know that about their dad too). We can know that God will always be there for us. We can know that God wants to build a good relationship with us – during the good and bad times. Let’s work on our relationship with God and being present for others around us!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
