Our Refuge and Our Strength

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

20140530-104833-38913743.jpgThe Pope was going to travel from one little town to another in the Midwest. The roads were long and with very few cars on them – so he asked his driver if he could drive some. How was the driver to say no – so he sat in the back with the tinted windows and the Pope began to drive. On one stretch of road the Pope wanted to see what the limo would do so he got it up to 100 and was cruising along until a siren caught him from behind and he pulled over. The officer was new on the beat so he reported to his superior that he had stopped a driver doing 100 and was going to approach the vehicle. As the police officer walked toward the driver’s seat – he couldn’t see into the rear of the vehicle. As the Pope lowered his window the officer was taken back. He got the Pope’s license and registration and went back to his vehicle. He called his superior again and asked what to do. The officer said – what do you mean? He said I just pulled over a VIP doing 100. The superior said – was it the Police Chief? No – said the officer. Was it the governor – asked the superior? No – said the officer. Was it a Senator or Congressman – asked the superior? No – the officer responded. I’m not sure who he is – but he has the Pope as a chauffeur.

I know – silly joke – and you probably heard it many other ways. I heard it once using Billy Graham. The purpose of the joke is the surprise the officer felt when he saw the Pope behind the wheel and than wondered whom he might be chauffeuring.

We should be nothing – if not in awe that the Lord of lord’s – the King of kings – the One and only – Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior – our God – is our refuge and strength – an ever-present help when we are in trouble – and at all times.  I stand amazed that God would care enough for me to be there for me.  When I call upon Him – He answers me and abides with me.  He is my refuge and my strength and if He isn’t yours – He can be – today!  Seek His face while you desire His grace.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
