Are We Drifting Away?

Galatians 1:6

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel

20140530-104833-38913743.jpgCan you remember when you first received Jesus into your heart? If it was anything like my first time – I was on fire – ready to convert the world. I wanted to tell everyone about Jesus – my friends – my classmates – the youth group – most anyone who I could get to listen – and some who didn’t want to listen. As time went on I started a series of ups and downs in my spiritual life. I’d backslide – start to lose my zeal – my excitement – only to hit another mountaintop experience that would fire me up again.

Since my first mountaintop experience – I’ve had many ups and downs in my spiritual journey. One of the mountaintop experiences I remember vividly was in October 1997 I believe – it was the Stand in the Gap gathering of men sponsored by Promise Keepers. I was there – among the men who some numbered at over a million – while others estimated the crowd at over 3 million strong (some only counted the center section of men and not all of the side sections and the Washington Monument crowd).  Check out the video.

It was a mountaintop experience for sure for this 42-year-old pastor (at the time) and it helped to raise the men of our church. Iron-to-Iron (our men’s ministry) – received quite the boast from this event and the number of other events that we attended together. I can remember other Promise Keeper events too – along with ASP mission trips – revivals – and other events that lifted the hearts and minds of the men and women of our church.

What has lifted your spirits over the years? Was it a particular study you shared? Was it when someone came along side of you and invested time in your spiritual development? Whatever it was – do it again! We need more mountaintop experiences for sure.

Here is today’s passage in partial context as Paul writes about folks falling from their spiritual highs! Galatians 1:6–10 – I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse! 10 Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.

We drift from our mountaintop experiences when we allow ourselves to be drawn away from Christ. No one ever drifted in their spiritual fervor by moving toward Christ dear readers. If you feel yourself drifting – turn toward Christ – begin something new – go to a conference – listen to some new Christian podcasts – dig deeper into the Word of God!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
