A Guarantee Of What Is To Come!

2 Corinthians 5:5

Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

20140530-104833-38913743.jpgHave you ever wondered why you’re here? Ever questioned some of the things that have happened to you in your life? How Sovereign is God in your life? Does God have a plan for your life? Are we striving to walk in that plan? Are we seeking that plan? Are we seeking His face, while we desire His grace?

A High School classmate of mine just died – after a battle with cancer. He was a great man – a true patriot and man of God. He was a family man and a man of the community. Several people have asked me to make sense of his death. He loved the Lord and served Him with his life. It is not easy for family and friends to understand. Questions are being asked and answers are few and far between.

I started my portion of his service by saying I wished I had words that would make it all right – that would answer all our questions – but I don’t have such words – nor do I believe such words exist. What I can do is point us toward what I do know.

God knows everything that will happen to us and around us – He is Sovereign. NOTHING happens that catches God off guard – He is ever vigilant. I do know that God loves us – that God desires to be in relationship with us – that God knows far better than we do – what is best for us. God also wants to heal – wants to bless – wants to give us a witness. At times – my understanding of all of these things – and more – leaves me confused – but I realize – God’s foolishness is wiser than my greatest wisdom (1 Corinthians 1:25).

Here is today’s passage in partial context. 2 Corinthians 5:1–11 – 1 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. 2 Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. 7 For we live by faith, not by sight. 8 We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. 11 Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.

These promises supersede our questions. Whether we are healed or live a few years longer – pails before the knowledge that when this life ends – we will be given a new body – and live with God for eternity! These promises of eternal life far outweigh a few more years here on earth – don’t you agree?

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
