What Is True Repentance?

Luke 5:32

I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

20140530-104833-38913743.jpgI can remember times when I was a child – my brother or sister and I were having a rough patch – arguing about something – and my parents would come to the rescue and calm us down and tell us to makeup or to say we were sorry and get along! If we didn’t – there was always some consequence attached like no TV. We would usually makeup – but at times we didn’t really mean it – we simply wanted to continue watching TV. We went through the motions – but meaning was not always present. I’m not sure if our parents knew or not – but the fact that things settled down seemed to be enough for them.

Repentance is more than merely saying the obligatory I’m sorry and settling down. Repentance is multi-layered. Part of repentance is confession of our sins – acknowledging that we have done wrong in the sight of God. Part of repentance is grieving our sins – feeling the pain of having sinned and truly being sorry for having sinned. Part of repentance is turning from our sin and turning toward God. All three parts need to be present for true repentance: confession – grieving – and turning from sin and toward God.

Jesus came to call sinners – that would be us – to repent. Luke 5:32 – I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. As we process our sins – think about them – pray over them – I pray we are called to true repentance.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
