Be Still!

Psalm 46:10

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

20140530-104833-38913743.jpgMy son-in-laws use to get a good laugh – behind my back – at the fact that I will tell the girls – and at times my wife – to be still – when I wanted them to be quite for some reason – mainly when I was driving or was watching something important on TV (like a rerun of Andy Griffith).

Believe me – it is hard to get my women (wife and three daughters) to be still. They are full of energy and very independent and I wouldn’t want it any other way – but every once in awhile a man just needs things to be still so he can focus! Everyone knows that most men have a hard time focusing on one thing let alone several things at once!

Let’s look at today’s passage in partial context by reading the whole psalm. Psalm 46:1-11 – God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. 7 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. 8 Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. 10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” 11 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

We often strive to reach God – to please God – to help God – to give God instruction! I know that sounds silly – but think about it – haven’t we prayed and given God instructions? With all that is going on in our lives – and with all of the prayer requests we have and we hear – at times we simply need to be still and know that God is God – and that we are not! At times – we simply need to be still and place our trust in God – place our lives into His arms!

Where are we today? Are we more into giving God instructions or being still and allowing God to be God? Something to consider?

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
