Be Prepared!

1 Peter 5:8

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

20140530-104833-38913743.jpgBe prepared – the Boy Scout’s motto – or the song by Scar – envious brother of Mufasa – in the movie Lion King. Being prepared is a good goal for sure. We never know when our lives can change in the next heartbeat.

Life changed for my friend Mike last week – in a heartbeat – and for his family and friends as well. We had a great memorial service on Sunday afternoon for him – there were several hundred former and current students in attendance and their parents from his elementary school in Crofton (Crofton Meadows). The Board of Education was also well represented – as well as South County folks and friends from all over the area.

In the flash of an eye – the beat of a heart – all of our lives were changed – forever. My wife and I talked about updating our wills and we made some plans – in case or rather when – one of us leaves the other behind. It was a rude awakening for sure – Mike was ONLY 62.

Today’s passage reminds us that we should always be alert and of sober mind – because the enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. We must always be on guard – we must always be prepared – for the devil’s attacks. Satan is always about – trying to catch up with our guard down – waiting to snatch us in a weak moment – ready to pounce on us like an attacking cat.

Here is today’s passage in partial context. 1 Peter 5:6-11 – Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen. Resist the devil – standing firm in your faith – be prepared – and ready – because the devil is prowling around – ready to pounce.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
