Give Us This Day

Matthew 6:11

Give us today our daily bread.

20140530-104833-38913743.jpgA missionary from Africa came to a church I served a number of years ago. In talking with us – and taking questions – he was asked to explain the difference between Christians in his homeland and Christians in America. His answer was simple and to the point. He said folks in America often pray give us today our daily bread without a real need – they have refrigerators and freezers and food pantries filled with food. Many of the Christians in Africa are actually paying or their daily food. That hit me and has stayed with me for many years.

What does the phrase – give us today our daily bread – mean to a people of plenty? Have you ever thought about this phrase when you say it in the Lord’s Prayer? How can we make sense of this passage when we live with such plenty? Can we pray for those who don’t have? Can we be thankful for what we do have and how we might use it to help others?

Think on this for a moment and give me some reaction – some thought about your thoughts.  I would love to hear/read – what others think about this passage.  Tell me what you think?

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
