An Indescribable gift!

2 Corinthians 9:15

Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

20140530-104833-38913743.jpgChristmas is coming! Do you know what you want for Christmas? Do you know what you will be getting your children or your spouse or others?

What gift – Christmas or otherwise – have you gotten or given that stands out in your memory? I remember my red bike when I was around 7 or 8 years old. It was a full size bike and I had to grow into it – but I kept it and used it well into my teen years. I remember the banana seat I put on it (as a teen) and the monkey handlebars and the baskets for my newspaper delivery days. I rode that bike all over Annapolis.

I remember the year I bought my wife a very expensive ring for Christmas. I have a picture of her wearing it. It was a year we had agreed to not give gifts to each other. She made me take it back!

Of all the memorable gifts given and received – the greatest gift is the gift of Jesus Christ – the gift of salvation – the forgiveness of our sins. As expensive as that ring might have been – I could afford it by tightening up here and there. As memorable as my red bike (and my sister’s blue bike) was – it is no longer in my possession – it was given away for parts to a friend who fixes bikes.

The gift that none of us could afford – the gift that never grows old – the gift that is the greatest gift ever given – is Jesus! In just over a month we will celebrate His birth – but we should celebrate Him and worship Him all year-long – every day we draw breath this side of glory.

Having received such a great gift – we should – in turn – give generously to others. We should give out of the abundance that God has given us.

Here is today’s passage in partial context.  2 Corinthians 9:6-15 – 6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9 As it is written: “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.” 10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. 12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 13 Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14 And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

Celebrate Jesus by being merciful to others – by giving generously of ourselves – by loving in a Christ like way. Give generously to others from all that God has given – and be blessed!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
