What’s On Your Bucket List?

1 Thessalonians 4:17

After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.

20140530-104833-38913743.jpgSo what is on your bucket list? Sunday night my wife and oldest daughter were catching up on the latest episode of Hawaii 5-O. I’m not sure if it the hunks on the show or the scenery from Hawaii that keep them watching – it certainly couldn’t be the acting (LOL). The answer is probably both.

I asked my wife – after a beautiful scene of the ocean surf (I was in the room but not really watching) – if visiting Hawaii was on her bucket list. She responded that it was – and of course – she has to know that Alex O’Loughlin – Steve McGarrett – and – Scott Caan – Daniel Williams – will not be there – don’t you think?

So what is on your bucket list? A bucket list – for those who missed the movie of the same name – starring Jack Nicholson as Billionaire Edward Cole and Morgan Freeman as car mechanic Carter Chambers – is a list of things you want to do before you die. The movie has the stars ending up in the same hospital room and finding out that they have a list of things they want to do or accomplish before they die.

So what do you want to do before you die? Get married? Have children? Have grandchildren? Make your fortune in life? Buy a sports car? Visit all 50 states (a current trend on Facebook is telling others how many of the 50 states you have visited)? Travel around the world (join the military – they will get you all over – just ask some of our service men and women)?

I have a short bucket list – but there is one thing I would love to experience before I die – and it has to do with today’s verse. Before I die – I want to be raptured – I want to be raised to join God in the heavens. In other words – I don’t want to die!  Here is today’s verse in partial context. 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 – 13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

My bucket list item is to not die – but to have Jesus return for His church before I die – and to be raised up to join Him and the saints – like my father who died two years ago. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 – 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.

What’s on your bucket list?  What do you want to accomplish before you die?  Or – are you like me – and want to be raptured to be with Jesus before you die?

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.

  1. I have (had) three: visit all 50 states (done), ride in a B-17 bomber, and ride in a parabolic flight (zero gravity airplane ride). Still have the last two to go. For the rapture question you raise, I could write a book on it. In fact, that’s what I am doing and hope to do in retirement. Stay tuned.
