Fishing for People

Luke 5:10

…and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.”

20140530-104833-38913743.jpgEver been fishing? Usually you use bait to fish. A worm is usual bait – or a fly – or a fake fly/worm/bug of some sort. Whatever the fish are biting for that you are trying to catch. I’ve even seen some folks catch fish with a spear or their bare hands. I’ve also seen folks fish with dynamite. I guess there are lots of ways to harvest fish.

One can fish from a boat – from the shore – or one can wade into the waters after the fish.  It depends on what you are fishing for and how committed you are to being where the fish are rather than staying dry and safe.

The key is – catching the fish! Jesus was speaking to fishermen and using their lingo.  He told them to follow Him and He would help them catch men and women – people – for the kingdom. If we read the Gospels and the rest of the New Testament – the method often changed according to the circumstance. At times Paul used logic when speaking to the courts and leaders of a community. At times the Apostles would preach – at times they would teach – at times they would refer to stories of Jesus – at times they would rehearse the history of the people – at times they would use other forms of bait to catch the folks they were reaching.  At times – it seemed – they would use several different types of bait to reach the lost (miracles – the Scripture – story telling – life examples).

What tools – what bait – do we use to fish for souls for Jesus? Do we take the time to get to know the people we are trying to reach for Jesus?  Do we know what bait might work best to catch them?  Are we willing to alter our bait if at first what we are using isn’t working?  Are we trying to fish from the shore – not getting involved very much – or are we wading into the waters to reach the lost? How committed are we to fish for souls for Jesus?  Is catching souls for Jesus the goal?

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
