No Other Gospel

Galatians 1:6

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ.

Pic of Ray 11302014Truth is truth and does not change. I remember how upset we got as children when someone tried to change the rules of a game we were playing – mid-game! It just wasn’t fair for what started out as a homer (hitting the ball over the fence in the yard – to now become an out because no one else could hit it over the fence) ending up being an out. I also play basketball with some guys who made a 3 point shot – formerly worth 1.5 points (while regular 2 point shots were worth 1 point) – now worth 2 points – over valuing the long shot.

It always bothers me when an athlete signs a contract for say – 5 years at a set amount of money each year over the course of the contract – only to demand a new contract 2 or 3 years in because they think they are outperforming the contract. Would they accept a pay cut if they were underperforming? I know each sport is different – some contracts are guaranteed and some players can be cut and their contract voided.

One of the things that is frustrating to me is that some in the denomination I am part of have taken vows to support the discipline of the church and now – rather than work to change the discipline – they simply ignore it. How does that have any integrity?

Here is today’s passage in partial context. God was speaking to folks who were trying to change things as they went along – speaking through His servant Paul as he wrote in Galatians 1:6-10 – I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse! 10 Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.

When folks – even pastors and church leaders – try to change the rules mid-game – to something that is not founded and grounded in the Word of God – something is dearly wrong! There is NO OTHER GOSPEL other than what we have been given through God’s inspiration in the Word of God – the Bible. I know that may not be PC (politically correct) – but it is the truth – and truth does not change – even when the culture around us changes.  Truth doesn’t change with the feelings of folks – it is truth and doesn’t change.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
